Chinese Supply Chain Capabilities and Reach – A Practical Guide from the Factory Floor
Chinese supply chain capabilities and reach have been hard to copy over the last five years, with more and more streetwear brands shifting production to China for the breadth and elasticity of their supply chain.
Having worked in garment manufacturing in Humen, Guangdong, dealing with brand owners worldwide for many years, I will, from the perspective of real experience, explain to you all of the procedures undergone – from sourcing all sorts of fabric to selecting the right factory in China.
Know What You’re Making First
Streetwear is a very diverse area. Every approach has its own characteristic supply chains:
And the different factories that could produce one might not be able to produce the other efficiently.
Under pre-production, if you figure out what your brand aesthetic is, who your customer is, and what your retail price range is, then choosing fabrics and finding the right factory is a helluva lot easier.
China’s Fabric Market
Fully integrated domestic industry – from cotton to yarn to fabric to clothing products. Singlehearts in the world. More choices, better flexibility.
We use 320–380gsm for hoodies and sweatshirts. Anything below 280gsm is not going to give us the streetwear look. Anything 400gsm+ is way too heavy. Most Chinese factories range from 300–380gsm.
The most common is 180-220gsm 100% cotton – stock fabric is available very easily.
Nothing beats the deep‑dye knowledge available from Xintang, Zhongshan & Humen, Guangdong for denim. Heavyweight denim (12oz+) with stretch, special finishing – no problem. You have Japanese imported denim if you are happy to pay a premium and have longer leadtime.
Streetwear is certainly trending in world markets. There are that many 300g+ ranges from Chinese suppliers that were not available to this extent just a couple of years ago.
How a Garment Gets Made
For most new brand owners, the wrong mistaken is the sending of a sketch can make the stuff goes to market in two weeks after. Actually, it is far more complex.
The process:
Lead times in China:
OEM vs. ODM
Hybrid also works well. Choose the two or three best ODMs for season 1 and do a silk-screen variations to learn whether there is a market (dim-out. Upholstery, sportswear etc.); then try full OEs in the next seasons with those that sell.
MOQ is different. Mohs matter a great deal in Chinese factories. Chinese factories are all different, some can do 1000M/JK, some can 50 M/JK, and some even less. Now there are more and more Chinese street fashion factories that can do lower MOQs.
Cost Structure
Ex-factory price is 分. of fabric, trims, work, finished goods, packing, factory profit.
Most accounts are fabric. In‑country fabric available from Chinese suppliers at different quality levels.
Trims (zippers, buttons, labels, hangtags, etc.) – you can buy all of these trims in the US, if you need them. There are a lot of suppliers.
Work quality depends a lot on how complex your styles are. Because of the large workforce in Guangdong, you can have good workmanship most places if you shop the right places.
Finishing is where dollars and weeks go to die. The more processes involved, like screen printing, digital printing, heat transfers, embroidery, denim washes etc., the more days and dollars.
What I love about Chinese factories is that everything is in one place. You don‘t need to run around after different suppliers for every tiny thing.
How to Evaluate a Factory
Whenever I visit a new factory, I always examine a few practical issues.
Be cautious of any warning signals. For example, can they quote a price if they have not seen your tech pack? Do they want 100% in advance? Think twice if their prices sound unbelievable.
Why Humen, Guangdong Matters
If you come to China, you must come to Humen. It probably has the most complete garment supply chain in one place – fabrics, accessories, printing, washing, packing, shipping, everything within a 10-kilometre radius.
Much more to come on this point, but it‘s going to save you so much time on sampling, revisions, problem solving on the floor…. I was able to spend a day in the mills, then a day in the factories touring, and then a day checking out new fabrics and washes – you can‘t do that anywhere else.
What really makes Humen powerful is the way all the links are so close together.
Building a Long‑Term Relationship
Please don‘t treat your factory as if it were a vending machine which just churns out garments. The better brands treat their factories as true business partners.
A good Chinese factory has a wealth of experience – they‘ll advise you whether a design is feasible, recommend finishes that enhance the product‘s value, or change materials to make it better quality but not more expensive.
You concentrate on your market, your design, your branding – they do QC, sourcing and manufacturing. If everyone understands that, everything runs smoothly.
