Tips on How to Find Reputable Clothing Manufacturers in China for 2026

If you want to start or own a clothing brand and want to change factories, you might wonder nowadays: How to find a reliable clothing manufacturer in China?

We have been manufacturing denims in Humen, Dongguan for more than 10 years, and have experienced the pitfalls of hundreds of brands when it comes to sourcing. We have seen many brands messed around at this stage—some following the tech pack and being given loose quotes that led to nightmares during manufacturing, some looking solely at FOB rather than lead time, QC and rework costs, and saving dollars on a product they would be paying for later on. Consideration of a manufacturer goes well beyond getting a quote and haggling over the price. It is about finding your backup warehouse, your production team and your risk manager rolled into one.

Before you begin reaching out, make sure that you have these 4 items prepared:

  1. Tech Pack – your product map. Be sure to include sketches of the styles, sizing specifications, fabric & trim information, label placement and packaging directions.
  2. Bill of Materials (BOM) – for each product: fabric, zippers, buttons, hang tags, packaging, etc.
  3. MOQ and estimated annual order volume – whether you will be ordering 50, 100 or 500 pieces in your first run makes a big difference in which factories will give you serious consideration.
  4. Cost target and launch date – without knowing your cost upper limit and launch date, factories cannot give you a realistic plan.

This is our check system by default: industry referral / friend recommendations > fabric supplier recommendation > trade show > Alibaba / 1688.

Why? Yes, locating a factory is like locating a doctor – a recommendation from someone you trust is far more effective than searching for one blindly. Fabric suppliers especially know which garment makers will have things on time and with good quality, and which ones will not.

There is scope for Alibaba; the key is to know whether you are dealing with a trading company or a real factory. Three simple tests to identify the factory are:

  • Check whether they focus on one product category (not everything under the sun).
  • Request to see a live video of the workshop and their address.
  • Find out if they have pattern making, cutting, sewing, washing and QC all in-house.

One quick way to vet a factory:

  1. Capacity match – don’t approach a factory that only takes 3,000 pieces per style if you are doing small-batch custom runs.
  2. Certificates – BSCI, OEKO-TEX, ISO 9001, GRS (for recycled/reused materials). Check the certificate numbers. One in eight factories cheat.
  3. Sample quality – inspect the stitching, measurements, wash effect and trim smoothness; tolerance should be ±1 cm.
  4. Communication – if they are slow to reply during quoting, they will be slower during production.
  5. Client references – a factory that has a lot of denim experience does not mean it is good at knitted T-shirts. Ask them for examples of similar work.

6 warning signs that should lead you to walk away:

  • They quote you without even having seen your tech pack.
  • They require payment in advance for the entire amount.
  • They cannot validate the address, the equipment or the workshop.
  • They have not previously worked with clients similar to you.
  • When sampling, they start to stall almost immediately.
  • Their price is 40%+ below the average market price.

A price that is too low is not a bargain – it is a prepayment for rework, delays and frustration.

Cost and MOQ outlook to 2026

For the China market, usual jeans MOQ is 100–200 pieces per design, with average sampling fees about $200–$500 per design. T-shirts & hoodies are usually in the same range.

CMT costs: for jeans in China expect $4 to $10. (Note: fabrics represent 50–70% of total cost, and CMT labour represents 15–25% of total cost.) So don’t focus on labour alone – choosing the wrong fabric can blow your whole budget.

The process from inquiry to first order has nine rules. The first one is important:

The complete process commonly is: define your need, shorten the list, send RFQ, compare quotations, check the certificates, ask for samples, agree on payment terms, then place a trial order. It is recommended to allow a lead time of 3 to 6 months from order placement to delivery. Regarding quality check, AQL 2.5 is your term; usual payment terms are 30% deposit, 70% before delivery.

From our experience, a truly dependable supplier will not offer the lowest quote, but they will provide consistent performance on OEM/ODM, sampling, lead time and quality. Better to have consistent quality than to haggle over a cheap quote.
