Fitness Wear Manufacturers: What Happens When Clothing Meets a Hard Workout

Fitness wear manufacturers realize that a piece of apparel can be ideal at the moment it is being put on, but its behave very differently once the working out begins.

A new pair of leggings may feel just right while trying it out in the fitting room. A training top may look just fine in a photograph. But when one begins lifting, running, stretching, and sweating, the test is entirely different.

That is when fitness wear no longer becomes just an average, normal piece of clothing.

A Workout Changes the Garment

Clothing is constantly moving and adjusting against the body when training.

Arms are acting over head. Torso twisting. Knees bending. Waist stretching. Cloth through multiple direction constantly engaged.

What makes one fashion style more flattering than another is much better at archiving a flattering effect when a person is motionless. However when the movements are added to a style it can fall the short in many areas.

‘Band continues to drop’. The waistband will begin to slide down.

A shirt can pull up.

The seam line may be trapped in the wrong position.

The shape of a pair of leggings could stretch and take a while to regain the original shape.

These are tiny details when ordering a sample. However they become very evident when working out.

Fit Matters More Once You Start Moving

Everyday wear and how it actually fits. Fitness wear requires a different sort of fit than everyday apparel.

A T-shirt look okay when I stand still. Training clothes have to look OK when I am moving.

Lift your arms.

Bend down.

Squat.

Stretch.

The shirt/garment should flow easily without having to constantly be fumbled with.

This becomes especially critical at the shoulders, waist, hips and legs. A small adjustment in the pattern piece or proportion can have an unexpectedly significant effect on how the garment moves during the activity.

Sweat Changes the Way Fabric Feels

This fabric feels really good when dry, and then totally different after a run.

It feels less greasy as the sweat condenses, is not sticky or heavy, and is more breathable and faster drying, and the skin feels drying and less clammy.

That‘s why selecting a fabric for fitness wear is not just a matter of “something soft or stretchy”.

The question is what that fabric will be doing twenty or thirty minutes later.

~ remains comfortable?

Fast enough to dry a reasonable amount?:

Is it anything more? Now it is getting heavy.

Does it still feel nice and smooth on your skin?

Even those details are part of the product experience.

Support Is a Construction Problem

Getting good fitness wear must not have performance characteristics just for the fabric,

The pattern, the seams, waistband, straps, panels, assembly and so on.

A sports bra, for instance, requires more than an elastic fabric. Its performance is measured by the interaction between its constituent parts:

The same goes for the training trousers and training tops.

You do need to select your fabric thoughtfully; a badly constructed piece of clothing made from perfect fabric will be equally unflattering.

That‘s why production development is as important as choice of material.

The First Sample Should Go to the Gym

This is a sample of a fitness wear that should not be on the dummy ever.

It must be worn.

Run in it.

2004 Video Crush. It would be easy to chalk up today‘s video crush in the same way as those I experienced in 2004.

Lift of it.

STRETCH MOLECULE IN WIND.

As we discussed 4/11 930, there was sweat in it.

Come in and wash it, and wear it again.

Here is where, undetectable when fitted, a problem can present itself.

Could it be that the waist band it moving during the squats?

Perhaps extending the shoulder straps may help.

Perhaps a seam is irritating after repeated movement.

Perhaps the fabric is not as resilient as anticipated.

It is far more simple to identify these issues just during sampling, rather than after a huge batch has been produced.

Durability Only Shows Up Later

The first calibration workout gives you the current state of performance of the problem; for example, rubber.

Wear repeated at will tell you it still works a few months down the line.

Active wear for fitness is usually washed regularly, constantly stretched to bend the body and covered with sweat and friction.

The fabric needs to relax.

The stitching of it should be held firmly.

The shape must be kept unchanged.

Colors and finishing should be durable as well.

If one train one sample can pass is not the surely a sturdy product.

What Brands Should Test Before Bulk Production

Before plumping for a large order, brands should consider more than what the clothing looks like on a mannequin.

Five simple questions can reveal a lot:

Is it madeto measure?

Stay in place whenmoving?

Is the fabric still comfortable when wet?

Is it resilient? Does it recover after stretching & washing.

Can a same thingneeds to be re-produce in a bulk?

The questions that are especially vital are.

A manufacturer might be able to produce one very good specimen.

The difficult part is to produce several hundreds or thousands of garments, all behaving the same.

From Fitness Wear to a Real Product

What is our end product when selling a fitness brand? The product is not just stitching, fabric and logo.

That‘s the experience you get of having it on.

Assuming the waistband remains in place, the fabric is comfortable and the garment functions normally even after repeated washing; the customer probably never even notices all the above.

That‘s often a good sign.

Is keeping everything out of the way.

Developing Fitness Wear With JiuvelWear

At JiuvelWear we partner with clothing brands building custom clothing and private label lines.

For each project we offer fabric sourcing, sample development, custom patterns, branding, packages and bulk productions.

Brands can pitch us an existing design with technical pack, a sample garment, or an initial product idea.

Design of Fitness apparels is not only about a sample that looks good.

The aim is to make a garment which can be consistently worn by real customers and used in real training sessions.

A fitness clothing isn‘t really tested when it‘s sitting on a shop shelf.

It rocks when you are halfway through your work out and have stopped thinking about what you are wearing.
