Shorts manufacturer is a phrase commonly used by clothing brands who, for whatever reason, have a product concept or article of clothing in mind, but just need a factory that can make it. Shorts may appear to be an easy product to manufacture compared with jackets or more rigid outerwear, but there are many subtleties in proportions, fabric, waistband, detailing, pockets and finishing that can dramatically affect the final product.
In the case of a brand designing a collection, the issue is not only to be able to get the suitable person to sew the pair of shorts but to be able to use a manufacturing system that will deliver the same fit and details of the product.
It also important to have finalized the shape/ more specifically the silhouette… (before deciding on the fabric or incorporating branding).
A casual short, sporty short, fitted short and baggy daywear short can all be made of similar fabric and, depending on how it is assembled, give unique effects.
The key measurements include:
If you only change a few of the above dimensions, a pair of shorts can look totally different.
As an example, a wide open leg will give a loose and laidback silhouette, while a narrower opening, in combination with a shorter inseam will give a more athletic silhouette.
This is the reason why a reference image by itself is not used often for custom production.
Choose a fabric that fits your purpose for the shorts.
Cotton lighter in weight would be suitable for relaxed summer styles.
Heavy cotton or twill will help give a more structured appearance.
French terry. Can give a softer touch to loungewear or streetwear shorts.
It is going to likely be nylon and performance fibers for the active styles.
The use of denim, however, raises other issues, not least in the case of the actual procedures involved in washing, fading or distressing or stiff construction.
The same pattern can, as a result, create totally new garments with the use of other fabric.
Fabric name alone is not enough; the manufacturer should know weight, contents, stretch, finish, and what the wash behavior will be.
The waistband influences comfort and fit:
A shape-up waistband could require a variation on the construction of a fixed waistband with a zipper and button.
The drawstrings open up yet another choice: inside or outside, thin or broad, shown or concealed.
Everything from drawcord color and eyelet treatment to waistband width and detailing can be a defining characteristic of a custom brand.
Any competent sample should gt; be put on beon 12 and not be judged solely on a table.
Must also be comfortable when the person is sitting, walking, and moving around.
Pockets are convenient, but they are visual too.
A cargo short with large side pockets looks entirely different from a clean chino short.
The placement of the pockets also affects the usability.
A pocket which appears to sit balanced in a technical drawing may feel or sit “unbalanced” when a person puts their hands in it.
To be successful, the opening, depth, lining, reinforcement, and stitching must all be brought into play.
For brands that are focused on very unique shorts, than these specifications are worth deciding before the mass quantity.
There is no definitive or “correct” length for shorts.
Fashion brands like a long, oversized silhouette.
A brand of activewear might be in need of a greater ease of movement.
A collection of resort, for instance, can have a shorter proportion.
What really matters is consistency.
Once approved by the brand, the inseam and leg opening become part of the product specification.
This is especially true for the production of multiple sizes.
The proportional grading between sizes needs to keep the body intended silhouette rather than just enlarge all dimensions by equal amount.
Samples do not just show that the factory is capable of producing the garment.
It is a chance to find problems.
Put on the shorts.
Walk in them.
Sit down.
Move around.
Has the waistband.
Keep a small object in every one of them.
Then if the final product is to be washed rinse them:
Hence, it will be tested by comparing the measurement with the specifications.
Has the waist altered?
The first thing to check for is whether the fabric has shrunk?
Has the opening of the leg improved?
Is the garment the proper length?
Such checks can also uncover issues totally hidden by a product picture.
Branding would the retailer like to see embroidery, screen printing, patches, labels, woven details, or other branding?
These need to be considered as core design aspects rather than as an afterthought.
Where they are located can change where seams and the pockets are.
Present adhesive strength is not sufficient to support embroidery.
When fabric is stretch or textured; a larger print may shift.
The woven label must be constructed and placed correctly.
Thus, the final product can be viewed as a finished designer garment and not simply a pair of under dressed shorts with some brand logos attached to the end.
Complete custom development not necessary for every brand.
If the reason is simply to prove a straightforward product, then it should be ignored.
A brand can start with a base style, add choice of fabrics and colourways, and add the branding to produce each individual style..
May lowered the amount of development time required, and minimized the initial set of parts.
It is less appropriate when the shorts themselves are required to look identical to typical market offerings.
Custom development becomes more useful when the brand needs control over:
This, at this stage, is not just manufacturing a ready garment.
The factory is therefore supporting the standardize production specification being developed for a specific product concept.
For brands that are designing products to be incorporated into their identity, such nuances are important.
Just getting a good sample is just step one.
The approved sample is to evolve into a benchmark for mass production.
Ensure clear specifications of all measurements, fabrics, construction, colours, trims and final finishes are recorded.
The quality control then has to check the garments produced to the required specifications.
This becomes more critical when the shorts have to be reordered.
The second order due to be taken should take it back to more of a similar product produced on first run.
The right manufacturer for the shorts is whatever the brand really needs.
A simple promotional short might have been produced in a quite different way than a heavyweight streetwear short or a custom denim shorts would have.
Some projects are for building image.
Others need pattern making, sourcing fabric, fitting, washing, and very complex production work.
The more specific the product is, the greater the importance of manufacturing communication.
A useful factory would be able to interpret the item and its drape as they are not visible on the body and explain how they can be produced repeatedly.
The custom apparel manufacturer JiuvelWear is run by Dongguan Jiuzuo Clothing Co., Ltd., and produces garments for brands designing shorts, hoodies, T-shirts, denim, knitwear, outerwear and other apparel.
Depending on the needs for the collection, custom design shorts may be made from fabric choosing, fitting, sampling, private labels, branding, washing and all over manufacturing.
The aim is not just to simply produce the shorts that match the reference photograph. The aim is to produce a set of specifications that can be reproduced at the production scale.
While an individual short may have fewer piece parts than an individual women’s garment, this does not minimize the importance of product development.
Can alter its outline even a few centimeters long.
An alternative fabric can alter the drape.
A new waistband can alter the comfort.
A pocket can alter appearances as well as buildings.
When you are a brand producing your own collection, these choices are part of the product not small manufacturing details.
A good manufacturing relationship will guide those decisions from initial concept to finished garment and on through to a product that can be manufactured again successfully.
