Better Workwear Suppliers for Growing Clothing Brands

The first questions when choosing workwear suppliers shouldn‘t be price. To find a suitable piece of workwear, a supplier must know what the clothes will be worn for, how an individual will move in it, how frequently it will be laundered and what the nature of the job requires. Construction, warehousing, factories, hospitality and outdoor industries all require a different mix of comfort, durability, function and protection.

Start With the Job, Not the Garment

May have something in common. A warehouse worker and a construction worker, for example, may both be working in work pants.

Warehouse clothing might require: easily moved in clothing, comfortable materials, practical pockets, good durability.. Construction clothing might require: more durable fabrics, reinforced zones, high absorption details.

Hospitality goes a different route. Be it style, comfort, low-maintenance or uniform branding, light weight construction might be more important.

Similarly outdoor workers are exposed to weather, dust, wash, and long periods of time on their feet. A supplier needs to make sure he completely understands these factors.

Fabric Choice Depends on Daily Use

Cotton may provide a comfortable touch and excellent air permeability. Polyester might be advantageous in terms of easy care and durability. Blends of cotton and polyester could be considered to balance the positives for an everyday working garment.

Fabric weight. Weight is important, but heavy isn‘t necessarily good. You might get a fabric that is very heavy, which will stand up to heavy wear, but it might be a bit warm to wear for long periods.

The stretch–Workwear suppliers should also think about stretch. There should be a small amount of Stretch on trousers, jackets and shirts to make them easier to wear, but not looking like sportswear.

Choose the correct fabric (not following the formula of own work wear). It should be suitable to the job, climatic condition, washing cycle and desired price.

Durability Shows Up in the Details

Workwear endures a higher degree of weekly use than many of the other garments.

Repeated chafing occurs in knees, elbows, pockets, cuffs and seat regions. Reinforced and strongly stitched parts will be better able to withstand the stress of everyday usage.

Of equal importance is the construction of the pocket. The other things a worker may keep in his Pocket during a long day include Tools, Cell Phones, Keys, Cards and other Equipment. Form is nothing without function.

AATCC has enumerated certain textile tests that measure abrasion resistance, laundering color fastness, change in dimensions after washing etc. these tests can provide brands with useful indicators of how fabric will perform after repeated wear and care.

Comfort Affects How People Wear Workwear

It is not enough for something to be hardwearing to be good workwear.

A work shirt will have been worn for eight hours or more. The feel of the fabric, weight of the fabric, ventilation, ease of movement and the fit of the shirt are highly important.

A work jacket should enable the wearer to stretch, bend and lift without pulling constantly at the shoulders. Work trousers must allow comfortable movement at the hips, thighs and knees.

Can improve mobility although controlling the fit overall is still necessary. Excessive elongation can alter form and appearance of a garment:

Safety Clothing Follows Different Rules

Not all workwear is protective equipment.

OSHA characterizes PPE as any clothing or equipment worn by workers designed to protect them from hazards at their job site, such as coveralls, vests, and fullbody suits. PPE also encompasses gloves, safety glasses, and hard hats. She emphasizes that appropriately fitting PPE and control of maintenance, training, and proper use are included.

High-visibility safety apparel has its own specifications. This includes ANSI/ISEA 107-2020, which deals with the design, test procedures, performance criteria, and labeling of the garments. It also defines the garment Type and performance Class that relate the safety apparel with work environments and the levels of visibility benefit.

That distinction is relevant if a company begins to produce safety workwear. Standard company clothing is not necessarily suitable as protective apparel.

High-Visibility Workwear Needs More Than Bright Colors

A high-visibility article of clothing does not only consist of a brightly coloured orange or yellow material.

ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 provides information on background material, retroreflective material, combined-performance material, minimum material areas, and material placement. The ANSI/ISEA 107-2020 specifically discusses visibility in daylight versus low light conditions.

When suppliers make safety workwear for a brand, they need to know the standards before they start producing.

The same principle applies to any other protective clothing too. Firstly, choose the hazards and standards that apply and then construct the clothing to meet the demands.

Custom Workwear Can Still Look Modern

It does not need to be a plain boiler suit!

Brands are also able to produce them in their own unqiue colours, relaxed modern shapes, contrast panels, peeps, embroidered, screen printed, woven label, branded buttons, rivets, zippers and reflective trims.

The company may want a more classic work style jacket with a much cleaner modern fit. Another brand may desire relaxed fit trouser with utility pockets and a street wear aesthetic.

These elements can each bring a workwear range its own individual character without losing any of the functionality that the end user so greatly requires.

Testing Should Match the Product

The tests applied to any workwear item might not be exactly the same.

One sample for each basic company shirt have a check on the test of color fastness, shrinkage, measurement, seam, and laundry. For the high-visibility vest, it needs a different range of specification.

AATCC, for example, currently includes testing for the home-laundering of colorfastness, abrasion resistance, water repellency, absorbency and changes in dimension.

Effective at preventing brands from testing too much, also draws attention to the properties which influence the end product.

For protective workwear, the brand should also verify that the specified standard and testing requirements mentioned in the test report are relevant for the workwear items.

A Good Supplier Helps During Development

And it is the supplier‘s duty before the batch production began.

The brand could offer a sketch, a reference garment, a tech pack, or the most basic of the product ideas. The supplier has to work with those to develop fabric widths, patterns, measurements, construction details, and samples.

Sampling offers both parties more opportunity for identifying issues early on. In the sample, the team can check fit, pocket placement, fabric hand, stitch, mobility as well as appearance.

Clear communication is crucial in the case where the product contains safety requirements or several pre-made parts.

Workwear Production Needs Consistency

Even a good sample doesn‘t mean that your bulk order is going to be good.

In production control, for one, fabric quality, size, color, stitching, trim and branding need to be uniform throughout the orders. For larger amount of orders, with various sizes and colors, the control becomes more significant.

Brands should therefore demand knowledge about how the supplier regulates quality rather than only providing samples.

We want to make sure the quality of the garments leaving the factory matches the product we approve. A consistent process will ensure that quality.
