Launching an activewear brand may not need a total new piece from the beginning. A fitness label could begin with a current style of sports wear (i.e., leggings and sports bra), apply its own label, evaluate customers’ response, then produce a more innovative collection afterwards. This operation is beneficial for those activewear companies investigating for a private label activewear manufacturer, to combine the first collection with less items, but creating a strong label image.
Private labeling falls somewhere in the middle of retail wholesale clothing and complete custom manufacturing. The manufacturer might own the relevant patterns, fabric and construction, while your brand owns labels, colors, logos, hang tags and packaging.
That difference is especially important for developing new fitness brands. You will not always have to develop all your measurements and constructions from first principles. You can also begin with a successful product, customize it as needed, and develop a branded series based on it.
There are a number of suppliers already providing this kind of service. GenXport, for instance, supplies private label leggings, sports bras and gym wear with branding assistance at a MOQ from 50 pieces per style. Plucky Reach states a 100-piece minimum order requirement for private label activewear in addition to offering custom labels, hang tags and packaging.
Training clothing has to do more than looking good. It has to stretch, recover, move with, and be suitable for the activity…
Polyester, according to Textile Exchange, is the most common type of synthetic fiber. According to them, it is recognized by its strength, toughness, crease resistance and quick-drying qualities. They cite nylon as being a commonly used performance fiber for activewear because of its strength and stretchiness:.
A leggings manufacturer, on the other hand, could potentially specify using nylon-spandex or polyester- spandex blend, depending on a range of criteria. It boils downs to selection of the appropriate is blend. This also includes considerations of compression, softness, opacity, moisture control and type of sport.
If there are manufacturing issues, then a pair of leggings will give an immediate indication of problems as wearers will demand stretch without ‘bagging’. In particular, the waistband should be comfortable and elastic, whilst the fabric needs to have enough recovery and the garment to have retained its shape after many movements.
Most manufacturers nowadays come out with very specific needs for this one. Plucky Reach gives four-way stretch fabric, moisture-wicking fabric, flatlock seams, gusset construction for their activewear. BeRunClothes includes compression material, high-waisted power-mesh waistbands, opacity testing for their leggings.
Therefore I feel that a brand should assess the characteristics of a legging through exercise rather than assessing while flat on a table. Squats, stretch and catch, rebounding, washing can establish if a product photograph does not capture any fault.
A sample allows the brand to assess fit, fabric, construction, branding etc prior to bulk production. For activewear in particular, the sample should be able to address issues such as stretch, recovery, comfort, opacity and freedom of movement.
GoVoloom has about seven to ten days for samples and explain yoga leggings are made by 220-280 GSM fabrics, waistband structure, gussets and stretch testing. MijaWear has about five to seven days for sampling and 200 piece custom MOQ.
Those statistics explain, better than anything else, “why brands should request a dedicated schedule from their suppliers rather than assume all activewear factories operate on the same schedule.”
A private label range has to do a little bit more than put a logo on a sports bra. The brand can be introduced through woven labels, care labels, hang tags, packaging and often colour colour schemes and verifiable product characteristics.
Among Plucky Reach‘s private label activewear, the custom woven labels, hang tags, and retail-ready packaging are elements of this service. In private label manufacturing, some current trends are to let brands incorporate their built-in identity within a ready-to-wear prototype.
This method allows a new fitness brand develop a recognizably similar collection, without the full burden of developing a new garment from scratch.
Activewear undergoes frequent stretching, washing, rubbing, sweating and basking in the sun. A brand has to consider ‘after the second or third wear’, rather than simply when a sample is new.
AATCC upholds standard textile test methods for colorfastness to, among other things, perspiration, laundering, light, and rubbing. Also, its standards incorporate tests for dimensional change in fabric and finished clothes, abrasion testing, and methods of moisture management.
These tests offer brands and manufacturers an objective method of assessing performance. While they cannot replace laboratory testing, as a simple home test, the brand could wash the sample, then stretch it by hand back and forth several times, check the seams, and compare measurements to the larger sample before purchase.
There is no single MOQ for private label activewear. Different producers currently have very different Minimums of Quantity as a function of their business models.
GenXport promotes private label activewear (40 or so styles) at 50 pieces per style. Plucky Reach has 100 pieces listed for custom activewear, and MijaWear has 200 pieces listed. Yueyi Active has listed 300+ pieces per style as the default MOQ, though it also have small trial runs for the starting order.
These differences raise the question of whether the MOQ cited is per stock product with the branding or a necessarily custom-made production. They can be very different in the work needed to develop and produce.
New brands often begin with private label products because the model enables quicker testing of product. When an individual style begins to sell on a regular basis a brand sometimes seeks to have greater control over the offer.
That next step could be anything from using custom fabric, to using a different compression, to requiring new measurements, to designing a new waistband, to establishing a new panel structure, to offering a custom color, to designing a completely new pattern. The brand has just transitioned from branding an existing product to designing a product that would be very hard for other brands to imitate.
For a lot of the brands, that progression just makes business sense: begin with a manageable private label offerings, identifying what consumers are interested in, and fund higher levels of custom development after the market reveals genuine sales figures.
A factory ought to fulfill the technical specifications of your activewear. It must not be just looking for the lowest quote. Is the factory able to produce the activewear in the technical fabrics you require? Is it able to produce your activewear with the construction / branding?
Check the sample process also. A competent contractor will look into fabric discussions, measurements, fitting, construction, labels, testing and manufacturing rather than simply converting the logo to a body chart.
JiuvelWear, a division of Dongguan Jiuzuo Clothing Co., Ltd., is a support to brands on fabric sourcing, sample development, custom apparel manufacturing, inspection and quality control. If brands intend to eventually advance beyond private label products, such a platform can be a step forward.
Private label activewear provides a beginner new activewear label with a tangible starting place. You can experiment with leggings, sports bras, shorts, tops and co-ordinating sets without having to create each product from scratch.
By having a more definitive point of view, the brand can gradually upgrade the quality of fabric, more dramatic fit and custom construction. This careful, slow ramp will limit product development at the outset while opening the way for stronger product differentiation emerging later.
So the benefits of a private label activewear manufacturer who is right for you are more than just labels & packaging. It is in the synergies of right fabrics, good construction & sampling, quality control and capacity to grow with you.
